Recently I attended a seminar that promoted teaching how to crack social networking and help your business grow. This was sponsored by a large company whose services my company currently uses so I felt this was a qualified event to attend and the speakers on the list seemed very interesting. I was very excited about all the knowledge I would gain from this all day event. Well, you know what they say, nothing is free!! EVERY speaker was only there to do a sales pitch for their book or DVD series to obtain the knowledge this seminar promised we would receive. It was an entire day of infomercials! The “free lunch” was simply cold cuts and two salads. There was no way to even make a sandwich. So, okay, I didn’t pay for it, so I guess it was worth every penny. To sum it up, I wasted an entire day there that could have been spent working on growing my company!

A final farewell to Captain Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie. He lived life doing what he loved. Strokes are really, they happen to real people all the time. I’ve had two myself, but I was one of the lucky ones, I survived both of them. I do have some challenges to face each day from the after effects caused by the strokes. Your chances for having a stroke can be decreased by quitting smoking, eating healthy foods and exercising. Do it for the ones you love, the ones you want to be there for!

A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

Remember when you got married and you got 4 toasters? Then you had to return 3 of them if you could and what a hassle that was? I ran across this article about gift cards vs. cash! I totally agree with Liz Pulliam Weston and here is part of the article.

"After reading her list of reasons not to get gift cards, I’m becoming less of a fan of them myself (unless I can get them for free, of course). I didn’t know, for example, that some retailers won’t let you split purchases with gift cards. This means that if you have $3 left on your card, and the cheapest item in the store is $4,you’re out of luck. That would tick me off royally. I don’t think I’d shop there again if they pulled that.

Men and their logic often escape me and my sweetie is no exception! We work different shifts, he nights, me days. He loves to record TV programs that he misses while at work. So the deal was he could record on the bedroom TV, leaving our other television free for my viewing pleasure, provided the recording ends before I go to bed. The VCR in the bedroom makes strange noises when it stops recording and that wakes me up. Seems logical, right? One night before he left for work, I came into the bedroom and heard the VCR humming away. I asked him how long it was set to record and he said, sheepishly, “About 1:00 am.” My jaw dropped, but his retort was PRICELESS, he said, “It’s okay, I turned the fan on so that will drown out the VCR sounds!!” I laughed, “My dear,” I said, “Noise is noise!!” He is such a sweetheart, how could I be mad at him for trying to be thoughtful? Thank god for men, life would be so boring without them!

Struggles, Haiti and Molly Hightower

I started out to write about my struggles with overcoming my disability due to a stroke that left me unable to speak. Then the earthquake in Haiti happened and Molly Hightower died. I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Molly and it is tragic that her life was ended way too soon. From all the news reports I’ve heard, she had a good heart and lived her live knowing she was helping those children.

On the other hand, think about it for a minute, are you living your passion like Molly did? Is your job and life fulfilling in the way hers seemed to be? Finding a passion in life can be a really difficult task, so in that regard, I am truly blessed. I found my passion, being a woman and owning my own business doing something I love! My company Foldin’ Money is so fun and so unique that it makes me happy to be a part of it. As a stroke survivor I am doubly blessed in that I can run my business in spite of my garbled speech. Being a crafter myself, I enjoy watching other people create in different mediums. Today while watch Donna Dewberry, the creator of One Stoke Painting, on my local PBS station she said something that I thought I should pass along to all my readers.

She said, "Don't go for perfect, go for the effect!" So that's my hint for all of you who are buying my Foldin' Money Design Kits. Being a Big, Beautiful Woman myself, it is so refreshing to see plus size women portrayed is such a positive light. I was afraid they would portray her as someone with no brains and just stuffing her face all the time, thinking of nothing but food or immediately put her on some stupid, crazy diet. I’m thrilled to see they aren’t doing that! However, the “love” interest in the story doesn’t speak well of men in general. I received one of the most interesting comments from a customer recently. She travels during the holidays to visit her family. She was really dreading the annual hassle of getting her gifts on the plane without them being damaged or lost, not to mention the extra money it would cost her if they were shipped separately. You guessed right! Yours truly will be featured on a segment on the local TV news! It was so exciting to be interviewed by a television reporter. I am so eager to see it when it airs! There was a bit of preparation beforehand thinking of what to say and how to best say it to get the most out of the short time we had. As many of you know, I am a stroke survivor and I have difficulty speaking clearly. Being interviewed on camera was fairly nerve wracking for me; however, it came off without a hitch due to preparation and the reporter also greatly helped me feel comfortable with the whole experience. Tribute to My Two Dads!

I had a wonderful father while I was growing up. At Christmas time, he would paint the windows with holiday designs, all freehand! All through the year, at holiday times where gift giving was involved, my sister and I would wake up and find a riddle on our pillows. These were actually clues we needed to decipher and follow in order to find our presents. They were always corny, but ever so wonderful. That I believe is where I got the creative gene for my artistic endeavors! (It should also be noted here, that my mother taught me to be creative in a host of other ways, thrifty, silly and loving.) I wish now I had hung on to all those little slips of paper so I could have saved them in a family scrapbook. The world lost a beautiful soul when he passed away in 1975. I forever miss and love him.

However, God does work in wonderful ways and some time after my father’s passing my mother met an absolutely beautiful man. Hal was the most terrific step parent anyone would have a right to ask for. He was a funny, creative, giving, and well educated man. He had a thirst for knowledge and a love of life I always admired. Nothing stopped him. If he started a project and it didn’t go as he had planned, he always found a way to make it work! When the house needed painting, instead of hiring it done, which he could have easily done, he found black paint and white paint on sale. He mixed them up and to everyone’s surprise it was a beautiful silver color. When people asked what color the house was, he would say “It’s Seattle Silver”. I often wonder how many people marched down to local paint store demanding Seattle Silver! I will also love and miss him forever! So if you still have your Dad, love him everyday you can!

Recently, while hosting a booth at a local craft fair, I realized that people are confused between Origami and Moneygami! When asking folks if they had heard of Foldin’ Money, some of the answers were “Yes, I saw a book about how to do it at a store” or “My friend does that and made me a ring”, etc. So I thought I’d blog to explain what the differences are.

Origami is an ancient art, time consuming to do and a long time to master. Generally, origami made of cash uses just ONE bill and it not made with the idea of giving it as a gift to be unfolded and spent.

Thanks to all of you who have purchased the Foldin’ Money Kits either from Amazon, my website or at the classes. Decorating your design is the best part; at least it is for me! How many of you have little bits of this or that left over after you finished an arts and crafts project? You go to one of those big box stores to buy stickers or ribbons and while you only need two to complete your project; they only sell them in sheets of 6! So you have a stash of little sparkly things, stickers and ribbons. What do you do with them?? Decorate your Foldin’ Money Designs with them! One of my customers was telling me that she is giving Foldin’ Money Stars to all of her New Years party guests as a party favor. Inventions are wondrous things! But timing is the key element to successful launching of said invention! Retail sales of a new product takes time, timing and investment. Putting together a new product is so much fun and while your in the process, dollar signs dance in your eyes. Then reality hits you square in the face and you learn that if your product is at all related to a holiday, you should have been in the market a year ago to be able to sell in the current holiday season.

I was watching the news last night on Channel 5 News; they had a story about the hard times in the economy and people making their Christmas presents this year. The Next Chapter in The Foldin Money Story

Its been a while since I have written due to producing and marketing my new kits. I have released three designs which include the Star, Cake, and Shirt designs as do-it-yourself kits. This was a huge undertaking which included writing directions, building templates, and packaging. My sister and I worked hard writing the directions to make them as simple as possible while keeping the image professional and affordable. Then came finding printers, packing materials, shipping costs, UPC codes, and the list goes on.

The hardest part was choosing an online retailer and in the end we chose Amazon.com because of its fulfillment program and customer service. This was not as simple as one would think and there were more then a few issues to deal with, but they have been resolved. The interesting part in all this for me was, you start out with one product and during the course of going into business to market the product, you learn that the thing you start out marketing is not always what you end up with!

Sorry for the delay in writing I have been busy; of course Folding Money “it’s what I do”. My sister and I have been getting lots of requests to learn how to make our Foldin Money designs well I have decided to launch some classes. I will be teaching the Star and Cake designs. The fist upcoming class will be hosted by Joann Fabric located at 5824 196th STREET SW Lynnwood Washington on October the 9th at 6:00PM. The class will teach participants how to make the Foldin Money Cake and Star designs. Cost of the class is $25.00 per person, which includes a supply list and instructions to make more of these unique spendable art designs. I am excited to share my knowledge and love of these gifts.

Some of my highlight orders this month included a custom House Design looking like a Ski lodge, a 5 tier wedding cake and bulk orders of Movie Camera’s for a customer appreciation. I am back to the studio Foldin Money let me know what you think.

The Ultimate Green Gift Product!

The big question is why? Well I think this can be answered in the words of one of my customers “So Foldin Money is like Sending flowers! But instead I am sending money. For example I want to send 100 bucks. Our biggest Challenge has been educating potential customers enough to buy! We have learned a lot about whom and where the best customer for us is? However we know our customer is a person who buys and gives unique gifts we are planning on attending more Arts & Crafts type events where the profile for our best customers is more likely to be. When and what is the right amount to give as gifts?

So I think it’s the when that matters in the first place. So there is the basic holidays the 12 federal ones anyway! But there is also the important ones of Weddings, Birthdays, Anniversary’s, Retirements, New Babies, and Graduations. This is really the fun part of my art because people really help with designing the perfect gift. We have lots of customizable features to add to our Foldin Money Product.

The how much question is not hard I use the SUE System which is anything unrelated to a wedding or anniversary can use the $25.00 amount, because who does not like cash and when it comes from Foldin Money you’re giving it with class. However if it is a wedding or anniversary I say no less then $50.00 makes you look more like you care. But this is the world according to the SUE System!

So the real trick is being organized and remembering to prepare for the upcoming gift giving occasions and remember the Sue System I will be in the studio working on my of your orders. Hope that helps.

This is a very interesting thing that seems to occur more and more often in my business. Although I have many designs already available, people like to challenge me!!

If you are in a business like mine, I had to learn to get paid upfront! I charge a $20 concept creation fee. Your time and skills are important whether or not your design or what have you works for the customer.

Generally these requests come from businesses looking for unique gift ideas for their customers or employees such as our Holiday House is a great hit at Christmas time for Realtors.

I am frequented asked for custom designs that "match" the companies product, these are always the most fun to do and at the same time the most frustrating! Such as phone, fire extinguisher, guitars, to name a few.

The best advice I can give you if you are in this situation is get paid for your time, it's your most valuable asset! Happy designing!

In a brief history of events Foldin’ Money has attended we have had the most success and fun when attending smaller and more intimate events. Because there more of an opportunity to make a connection with customers. An example of this is when we were first started out we attended The Port Gamble County Christmas. (http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2007/dec/02/kitsap-adventures-port-gamble-country-christmas/ ) . We had a great time for the two days we were there, enjoying the show as well as the people, place and activities. Even though it was cold, the orders made up for any frostbite we suffered! This was a highly successful opportunity and one we look forward to attending in the future.

When Foldin’ Money has attended larger events, we have had difficulty because people have a short attention span. But with adding technology to our display and having more promotional items to give away, we feel prepared for our upcoming event at the Taste of Edmonds.

Networking?

Since starting Foldin' Money I have been experimenting with several networking ideas, these include face to face and digital formats. With regard to face to face I have been to chambers, BNI groups, private networking groups and trade shows. These have been marginally effective to say the least. I have found that trade shows have been the most effective, but most time consuming to attend. It maybe my product, but my new pricing will overcome this huddle.As to digital formats I use facebook.com, http://Youtube.com, and http://Linkedin.com. So far the most effective has been my Youtube posting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Awqo47XSIdY, I had this video shot by a professional, similar to an infomercial. It was fun, interactive and has brought a lot of hits to our website foldinmoney.com. The second most effective has been our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/foldinmoneycom/15708766335, where we have a developing fan base. Last but not least, I am now using linkedin to reach corporate clients and expand my network http://www.linkedin.com/in/suetrapp. I prefer the benefits of digital networking because of the response and effectiveness of these tools.
